Witch and Wizard – Book Review

The world is changing—the government has seized control of every aspect of society, and now kids are disappearing. For fifteen-year-old Wisty and her older brother Whit, life turns upside-down when they are hauled out of bed one night, separated from their parents, and thrown into a secret compound for no reason they can comprehend. The new government is clearly trying to suppress Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Being a Normal Teenager. Imprisoned together and condemned to death, Wisty and Whit begin exhibiting strange abilities and powers they never dreamed of. Maybe there is a reason they were singled out. Can this newly discovered witch and a wizard master their skills in time to save themselves, their parents—and maybe the world?

There’s a reason people are always going back to James Patterson’s books, and after winning the 2010 Author of the Year at the Children’s Choice Book Awards in New York, I decided to try that theory for myself.

What I found was a great Young Adult read: Fun from start to finish, with a dystopian world and the bewildering New Order,  add a little magic and a gang of youths squatting in a department store ready to start a rebellion and you have the start of a new series with an audience already captivated by Patterson’s Maximum Ride Series.

There’s danger, suspense, the unknown and indescribable. Injustice abounds with a new tyrannical ruler who preaches against magic, but is magical himself… Sound familiar? You’re passed between reading the words of Wisty and then her brother Whit. They don’t necessarily take turns evenly to tell the story but it gives you a great balance of perspective. And when it comes to the crunch, while we’d all like to think that we’d be heroes, a change in circumstances will never prepare you for who just might be the weasel or the one who betrayed your trust.
