“Beautiful – The Carole King Musical” Review
On Friday night I saw a preview of “Beautiful” – the Carole King Musical.
While we all know a lot of Carole King’s music I think the show will surprise you. Just thinking about the number of Billboard Top 100 Hits that she’s written or co-written is mind numbing. 118. Yes, 118 of them.
“Beautiful” takes you on a journey from young Carole Klien’s early days as a “wanna be”16 year old songwriter through to her triumphant Tapestry album after her marriage breakdown which helped her finally find her voice as a solo artist. Of course it wouldn’t be a Carole King story without her teenage heart throb Gerry Goffin… but there’s more.
Like the friendship & rivalry between Carole and Gerry & songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil when they were writing songs for publisher Don Kirshner.
In fact, all four lead characters own the stage in their own way. The show is a blast, the cast is superb, costuming and lighting spot on and there’s some very clever one liners that’ll make you laugh, and laugh often. Esther Hannaford doesn’t only own the stage, she owns the role and becomes Carole King.
As for the music? There’s all the songs you’d expect from Carole and those she wrote for like The Shirelles, Little Eva, The Drifters and a couple of surprises from Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil from the likes of The Righteous Brothers and The Animals. What can I say? We play almost every song from the show here on 2CH.
“Beautiful” is on at the Lyric Theatre at The Star. The earth certainly moved for me, I reckon you’ll love it.
